Kawaii Rocketship Run and Hiding Game!

Laurie Berkner is a perennial storytime favorite. Her song, "Rocketship Run" is perfect for this summer's Universe of Stories theme. It is also a great segue into Zoom, Zoom, Zoom!

My favorite new idea is to make large portable flannelboards with permanent scenes.  Our A-frame rolling flannelboard is red, which is not the color I typically think of for space... So I wrapped a huge piece of black felt around a recycled plastic display sign and used spray mount to attach it. It worked really well! Surprisingly well. This was my first attempt and I'm pretty stoked about the results! The stars are mounted permanently and the other pieces are removable.

I intended to only use this while singing "Rocketship Run," but it works so successfully as a hiding game that I'm using it for that as well!
First, up go the earth

and the rocket.

They practice saying "5,4,3,2,1...Blast off another rocketship run!" and jumping up. I describe what will happen in the song.

We will go:
Spinning on the sun.

Dancing on the moon.

and Jumping on the stars.

As we sing, I put each piece on the space background
and at the end of the song it looks like this!

And here is the hiding game:

Where are the ducks?

There's a duck!

Another duck!

Another duck?

So many...

SPACE DUCKS!!!

  1. Thank you for your inspiring posts. I made some of your felt board images and the children in my class love them. This one is fantastic as well and I can't wait to make it this weekend. Thank you for sharing, Mr. Keith!
