Jill be Nimble

Gender-swapping the names from traditional nursery rhymes is an important aspect in my quest for storytime equality. Jill can jump just as well as Jack, yo.

Another fun variation is using the child's name instead of Jack or Jill. Rhymes are more fun when your kid is the star!

With a baby, say this rhyme while bouncing them on one leg, then have them "jump" over to the other leg at the end. Or assist your toddler by holding their arms and have them "jump" over an imaginary candlestick.  (Warning: do NOT use an actual flame for this!)

Jill be nimble,
Jill be quick,
Jill jumped over
the candlestick!

Any resemblance of this candle to "Lumiere" is purely intentional.

I slightly altered this rhyme based on one in the book I Love You Rituals by Becky A. Bailey, Ph. D.

Big thanks to Emily form Literary Hoots for hosting this week's:

  1. Of course I love this (and everything you make). I do this rhyme in my classroom (using each child's name) and have them jump over a wooden block (set on its end for the older kids, and lying on its side for the younger kids). Will be making a felt candle to go along with the jumping extravaganza--thanks for the idea!
